Conway
Mill Development Group was established in 1982 to work
for the regeneration of West Belfast for the benefit
of the community. It registered as non-profit taking
limited company (no. NI18505) in 1985 as Conway Street
Community Enterprises Project Ltd.
The
aims of the organisation are to promote and stimulate
local economic enterprises and job creation opportunities,
provide educational opportunities for adults and young
people and support the development of cultural and creative
enterprises.
The
Mill committee has set the following project objectives:
To deliver a flagship project that is a unique resource
and has the potential to make a significant positive
contribution to the economic life of West Belfast;
To develop the facility so that it will act as a catalyst
for other economic development initiatives and investment
into the Falls and West Belfast. To attract business
and assist in the expansion of employment, to add
value to the local economy and develop links with
the city;
To
create employment, both full-time and part-time (creation
of 130 indirect new jobs within a four year period);
To provide suitable facilities for educational places
for 300 people;
To
build upon past achievement to support and develop
the expanding craft, arts and tourism markets; and
To provide additional value added facilities that
will enhance the present form of support and services
currently available to existing and new tenants.
To
achieve a maintainable occupancy rate of over 85-90%
with the lettable space within a four year period;
Conway
Mill Preservation Trust Limited was set up in 1999 as
a company limited by guarantee (no. NI37461) and is
recognised as a charity by the Inland Revenue (no. XR35921).
Its
aim is the preservation, protection, and restoration
of the Conway Mill Complex for the benefit of the inhabitants
of Belfast and of West Belfast in particular.
Listed
Building Status
The committee achieved listed building status for the
complex in 2000.
