Refurbishment
Project
The
proposed refurbishment of the Mill Complex will ensure
maximum benefit to the local community through its continued
use for economic, cultural and social regeneration while
conserving an important part of the architectural and
social history of Belfast, particularly West Belfast.
This
will involve:
(1)
The external enveloping of two 4 & 5 story Mill
blocks (A & B) and two out buildings (C & D)
including, as necessary, the:
Repair/ replacement of roofs
Repair/ replacement of windows
Repointing of brickwork
Replacement of cast iron rainwater goods
Rebuilding of parapet wall, fire escapes etc.
Additional fire escapes
Site works including drainage, roads and footpaths
Entrance gates and signage
(2)
The internal refurbishment of the main blocks A and
B including the:
Servicing of all floors – electric, plumbing
and heating
Installation of fire safety systems and equipment
Meeting of all Health and Safety requirements
Upgrading accessibility to all parts of the complex
to ensure equal opportunities
Creation of a reception and information point
Development of craft and art floor
Finishing of floors to meet use e.g. office, retail,
manufacturing
(3)
The demolition of buildings E and F and minor infill
additions
To provide better access around the site
To increase car parking facilities and meet planning
requirements
To improve the visual appearance of buildings C and
D
Internal
refurbishment of buildings C and D has not been included
within this project
a)
Cost implication would have substantially increased
the overall cost of the project
b) A number of groups are looking for their own funding
to refurbish spaces within these buildings
These
also fulfil the objectives of the Mill Committee, which
seeks to concentrate on key themes of creating jobs,
supporting indigenous businesses (particularly craft).
Providing a platform for education and providing a resource
for the local community.
